- <p> A federal appeals court ruled that former President Richard
- M. Nixon must be compensated for the government's 1974 seizure of
- presidential papers and tapes after the Watergate scandal forced
- him to resign. Although the dollar amount hasn't been
- determined, some reports estimate it could run into the
- millions. Ultimately the American taxpayer will foot the bill.
- An editorial in the New York Times called the court's decision
- "ludicrous" and said the ruling "adds injury to insult." A
- spokesperson for Nixon says all the money will go to the Nixon
- Library and to pay Nixon's legal fees.
